The electronic ignition system is an integral part of the engine management system. Its main working components are spark plugs, coils and ignition modules, and on M73 engines, ignition distributors. On engines other than M73, I/O voltage distribution to the spark plugs is controlled by the ECM (ECM).
Manual adjustment of the ignition timing is not performed - if the required settings are violated, the failed components should be replaced.
The components of the ignition system are not subject to wear and do not require regular maintenance. According to maintenance schedule (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance) should only be made replacement of spark plugs.
System preheat diesel engines is designed to preheat the combustion chambers in order to confidently ignite diesel fuel. Glow plugs are used as heating elements, the operation of which is controlled by an appropriate electronic unit.
Basic information on the operation and sensors of systems management engine and fuel injection are set out in Chapter Power supply and exhaust systems.
Safety measures when working with ignition and fuel injection control systems
To prevent injury and/or failure of electrical and electronic components, the following must be observed:
- Do not touch the ignition system wiring or disconnect its connectors while the engine is running/rotating the starter;
- Disconnect/connect fuel lines of the injection control system, electrical wiring of the ignition system, as well as any diagnostic and measuring equipment only with the ignition off;
- It is not allowed to carry out maintenance work on the electronic ignition system by people with an implanted pacemaker;
