- brittleness and the presence of cracks;
- noises (e.g. in case of grease);
- transverse cracks in the wedges, destruction of the wedges, deposits of dirt and small stones between the wedges, fringing or wear on the side surfaces of the wedges, see also p. 194.
Attention: If the removed belt will be installed again, then before removing it is necessary to mark with chalk the direction of its movement. This will keep the belt in the same direction after installation.
Replacing the V-ribbed belt on the air conditioning compressor (all models)
The air conditioning compressor is driven by a wide V-ribbed belt with automatic tension.
Raise the car. Remove bottom engine compartment cover.
Insert an Allen wrench into the head of the tensioner pulley mounting bolt. By turning the wrench slowly clockwise, tighten the hydraulic tensioner -1- and remove the V-ribbed belt.
In accordance with the diagram shown, put a new V-ribbed belt on the belt pulleys, while the tensioning roller, as when removing the belt, turn to the stop to the right. Pay attention to the incorrect position of the belt in the grooves of the belt pulleys.
Release the tension roller by turning the wrench counterclockwise. The tension force is set by the tension element. tension is not adjustable.
Install the lower engine compartment cover. Lower the car.
Replacing the Poly V-Belt, Models 520i/523i/528i
The V-ribbed belt drives the alternator, coolant pump and power steering pump.
Remove viscous fan.
Remove the tension roller cover.
Insert an Allen key into the head of the tensioner pulley mounting bolt. By slowly turning the wrench in a clockwise direction, compress the hydraulic tensioning element and remove the V-ribbed belt.
In accordance with the diagram shown, put a new V-ribbed belt on the belt pulleys, while the tensioning roller, as when removing the belt, turn to the stop to the right. Pay attention to the correct position of the belt in the grooves of the belt pulleys.
Release tension roller. The tension force is set by the tension element, the tension value is not adjustable.
Install viscous fan.
Replacing the V-ribbed belt, model 525tds
The V-ribbed belt in a diesel engine drives the alternator, coolant pump and power steering pump.
Remove viscous fan.
Attach a powerful screwdriver or a suitable lever to the tensioning element, see illustration. Press the screwdriver down, compress the tensioner and remove the V-ribbed belt.
In accordance with the diagram shown, put a new V-ribbed belt on the belt pulleys, while compressing the tensioner, as when removing the belt. Pay attention to the correct position of the belt in the grooves of the belt pulleys.
Release tension roller. The tension force is set by the tension element, the tension value is not adjustable.
Install viscous fan.
V-ribbed belt replacement, model 520d
The V-ribbed belt in a diesel engine drives the alternator, coolant pump and power steering pump.
If necessary, remove the radiator shutters.
Insert the outer square of the socket extension ½ inch into the hole -arrow- as a lever.
Attention: Never use a screwdriver for this, because this may cause the hole to collapse.
Compress the hydraulic tensioner by slowly turning the extension clockwise. In the compressed position, fix the tensioning element with a pin or a drill shank by inserting it through the hole -1- into the hole on the bracket.
As with the 525tds engine, put on the non-belt pulleys with a new V-ribbed belt, while compressing the tension roller, as when removing the belt. Pay attention to the incorrect position of the belt in the grooves of the belt pulleys.
Release the tension roller and remove the lever. The tension force is set by the tension element, the tension value is not adjustable. If inserted, pull out the locking pin.
