- Pit or hydraulic jack with jack stands, oil suction device.
- Depending on the filter version, a wrench with an interchangeable socket head of 13 or 36 mm for releasing the central bolt of the oil filter housing.
- Wrench with interchangeable socket head 17 or 19 mm for releasing the drain plug, as well as a container for oil (if the oil is not being sucked out), which holds up to 8 liters.
The following parts are required for replacement:
- Only when oil is not being sucked out: aluminum O-ring for drain plug. The drain plug is 12mm threaded, the aluminum o-ring is A12x15.5 and is sometimes supplied with an oil filter.
- Oil filter element.
- O-ring for oil filter cover and, depending on the filter version, one or two O-rings for the central bolt. An oil filter of one of the two available versions can be installed on the same engine. Keep this in mind when purchasing replacement parts.
- Depending on the engine, 6.5-7.5 liters of engine oil. Use only approved BMW engine oils.
Lubrication system capacity including filter:
The difference in oil quantities between the pla and min marks on the oil level indicator is approximately 1 liter.
The oil must be changed in accordance with the indicated maintenance intervals, respectively for a gasoline engine every 15,000 km, and for a diesel engine every 10,000 km. If the mileage of the car is insignificant, change the oil once a year.
Under severe operating conditions such as short trips, frequent cold starts and extreme dust, the engine oil and oil filter should be changed at shorter intervals.
Engine oil can also be sucked out of the sump using a probe (at a gas station) through the oil level indicator tube. Then, first of all, it is necessary to buy new oil at the corresponding petrol station.
Attention: In any case, the old oil must be handed over to special waste oil collection points. Oil sales points accept the corresponding amount of old oil for free, so when buying oil, you must keep the receipt and the canister for the subsequent return of the old oil! In addition, the administration of districts and cities informs about where the nearest waste oil collection point is located. In no case should the old oil be simply drained or thrown away with household waste. This inevitably causes great harm to the environment by poisoning groundwater.
Draining engine oil
Warm up the engine to operating temperature. To do this, warm up the engine while driving until the coolant temperature gauge shows normal operating temperature. Finally, drive at least another five km to ensure that the oil temperature is sufficient.
Raise the car horizontally.
Use a Phillips screwdriver to open the cover under the oil pan, located in the lower casing of the engine compartment.
Place a container under the engine sump to drain the old oil.
Unscrew the drain plug on the side of the oil pan and completely drain the old oil.
Attention: Engine oil is hot! Fire hazard!
Attention: If metal chips and wear products are found in the engine oil in large quantities, this indicates seizing, for example, main or connecting rod bearings. To avoid subsequent damage, the oil passages and hoses must be thoroughly cleaned after the engine has been overhauled. Additionally, if present, the oil cooler must be replaced.
Changing the oil filter, version with central bolt
Remove central bolt -1- in middle of oil filter cover.
Remove oil filter cover -2- together with central bolt -1-.
Wait until the oil drains from the filter housing. Pull out the replaceable filter element -3-. Stop dripping oil with a cloth.
Insert a new filter element into the filter housing.
Attention. Follow the instructions on the filter housing.
Clean oil filter cover, replace and lubricate rubber seals -arrows- of cover and central bolt with engine oil.
Place the filter cover together with the central bolt on top and press down. In this case, the central bolt enters the corresponding threaded hole on the bottom of the filter housing.
Tighten the central bolt to 25 Nm.
Changing the oil filter, version with screw cap
Unscrew the screw cap using a 36 mm socket, eg HAZET 2169-2. At the workshop for BMW cars, a special tool is used to unscrew it, which is put on the outer diameter of the cover.
Wait until the oil drains from the filter housing. Pull out the replaceable filter element -1-. Stop dripping oil with a cloth.
Insert a new filter element into the filter housing.
Attention: Follow the instructions on the filter housing.
Replace and lubricate with engine oil the rubber seals -arrows- of the cover and oil lines
Place the filter cover together with the oil line on top and press down. In this case, the oil line enters the corresponding threaded hole on the bottom of the filter housing.
Tighten the oil filter cap to 25 Nm.
Oil filter change, 530d engine
Raise the car horizontally.
Release screws -1-.
Remove front engine cover -2-.
Release screws -1-.
Press off air duct -2-.
Attention: Do not damage the filter cover, loosen and tighten only when using a replacement socket. When the oil filter cap is released, the engine oil from the oil-water cooler flows back into the engine sump.
Remove bolt -1- from return line.
Unscrew cover -2- using a 36 mm socket, eg HAZET 2169-2.
Remove the replaceable filter element
Disconnect plug -3- from lubrication hydraulic switch.
Replace and lubricate the rubber seals -arrows- on the filter cover.
Subsequent installation is carried out in reverse order.
Filling the engine with oil
Screw the drain plug with a new sealing ring without applying much force. The tightening torque for the plug when using a 17 mm wrench is 30 Nm, and for a 19 mm wrench it is 60 Nm.
Pour the prescribed amount of new engine oil through the filler neck of the cylinder head cover, see table on page 188.
Start the engine and let it idle until the oil pressure warning light goes off.
Stop the engine. After a 10-minute wait, check the oil level, top up if necessary.
Close the cover in the lower casing of the engine compartment under the engine oil pan and use a Phillips screwdriver to turn the clamp of its fastening ¼ turn.
After a test drive, check the oil drain plug and oil filter seal for leaks and, if necessary, carefully tighten the seals.
Stop the engine warmed up to operating temperature, after about 2 minutes check the oil level again and, if necessary, correct the level.
If necessary, reset the maintenance interval indicator to its original position. This requires an expensive electronic tool, which is sold through BMW auto repair shops. Workshops at the request of the customer can set the pointer to its original position free of charge.
In order to be able to better control the operating conditions of the engine, when changing the oil, always use new oil of the same type and, if possible, the same brand. Therefore, it is advisable to attach a plate to the engine at each oil change, on which to indicate the brand and viscosity of the filled oil.
Alternately, without robbery, the use of different types of oils adversely affects the operation of the engine. Engine oils of the same type, but different brands, should not be mixed if possible. Engine oils of the same type and the same brand, but of different viscosities, can, if necessary, be topped up immediately during the off-season.
