For vehicles with a maximum speed of 240 km/h, only tires of strictly defined types and sizes may be used. More information can be obtained from a BMW workshop.
Follow the rules for the use of certain tires established in the country of your residence.
Choosing the right tires helps the ability to read their markings. The following is an example of markings for radial tires.
195/65 R 15 91 N
- 195 - Nominal profile width in mm
- 65 - Ratio of profile height to width in %
- R - Letter designation corresponding to the radial design of the tire
- 15 - Rim diameter in inches (for TRX and TD tires in mm)
- 91 - Code of load capacity (not applicable for ZR tires)
- H - Speed code (for tires type ZR is placed before the letter R)
The last of the ciphers named in the example contains information about the maximum speed allowed for this bus,
For tires with summer tread pattern
- S = up to 180 km/h
- T = up to 190 km / h
- H = up to 210 km/h
- V = up to 240 km/h
- ZR = over 240 km/h
For tires with winter tread pattern
- Q M+S=up to 160km/h
- T M+S = up to 190 km/h
- H M+S = up to 210 km/h
An example of marking tires for an alloy wheel
6 J x 14 H 2
- 6 - Rim width in inches*
- J - Letter profile designation
- x - Designation corresponding to the deep rim
- 14 - Rim diameter in inches*
- H 2 - Hump on 2 landing shelves of the rim
*For TR and TD tires in mm
Valve spools must be closed with screw caps to avoid contamination. Dirt entering the spool is often the cause of gradual air leakage.
Tubeless tires TD 230/ 55 R 390
Thanks to a special manufacturing technology, these tires retain pressure for a sufficiently long period of time when the tread is damaged, so you will be able to leave a busy highway, tunnel, bridge, etc. and replace the wheel in a convenient place for this.
With a damaged tire, you can drive for about 5 km, and with a very careful way of driving up to 10 km, depending on the load of the car and the condition of the road, at a speed of no more than 60 km/h.
Tires of type TD can only be installed on special TD wheels.
Wheels and tires recommended by BMW
BMW 520i, 525i
* Summer tires for BMW 520i only
** When installing summer tires on this rim, be sure to follow the installation rules, otherwise the brakes may overheat during heavy braking - contact a BMW service station.
1) Disc for BMW 520i only
BMW snow chains must be fitted to both rear wheels at the same time.
If your vehicle is fitted with a 240/45 ZR 415 tire on a 195 TR 415 rim, snow chains cannot be used.
Pay attention to the information about the wheels and tires included in the documents for the car. When using wheels and tires that differ in size from those recommended by BMW, it is necessary to make an appropriate entry in the passport data.
About making technical changes to the design of the car
At any BMW workshop, you will be happy to inform you about the appropriateness of the proposed changes, the relevant legal provisions and factory recommendations. To do this, you must specify the serial number of the car, and in some cases, the engine number.
