Examination
Wear of cardan joints is accompanied by the appearance of vibration in the transmission, noise during acceleration and a sharp metallic rattle during the collapse of the bearings.
Cardan joints are easy to check for wear without removing the cardan shaft. To check the rear universal joint, try turning the shaft while holding the transmission flange. Play between the driveshaft and the front or rear flanges indicates excessive wear.
If the driveshaft has already been removed from the vehicle, the universal joints can be checked by holding the driveshaft in one hand and turning the cross holder or flange with the other. If axial play is noticeable, replace the propeller shaft.
Replacement
Cardan joints cannot be repaired at home. Therefore, in case of wear, the cardan shaft and joints must be replaced as an assembly.
Sometimes it is possible to exchange a cardan shaft for a remanufactured one - consult a car service specialist.
The procedure for removing and installing the cardan shaft is described in Section Removal and installation of cardan shaft.
