Having determined the thickness of the shims installed between the outer rings of the bearings and the differential box (cm. «Differential Assembly»), install the differential box in the rear axle housing.
Torque tighten the bolts securing the side cover of the rear axle housing, making sure that there is no excessive interference between the teeth of the drive and driven gears.
Install an indicator on the rear axle housing vent cover and measure the backlash in the gear engagement of the final drive (see values in subsection «Detailed Specifications»).
If abnormal, achieve proper clearance by swapping the bearing cap shims from one side of the rear axle housing to the other without changing the overall thickness of the shims. If the clearance is increased, remove the rings on the side opposite the driven gear and install them on the side of the driven gear to bring it closer to the drive gear, and vice versa.
