After loosening the locknut, unscrew the four bolts securing the upper crankcase cover and turn the adjusting screw to move the cover away from the crankcase.
Remove the top cover and take out the bipod shaft assembly with the gear sector, which occupied the middle position after the front wheels were set to the straight ahead position.
Check the height clearance of the adjusting screw. If necessary, set the adjusting ring to a larger (or less) thickness. Remove retaining ring, adjusting ring and adjusting screw.
Note. After installing the retaining ring, the adjusting screw should rotate freely and without jamming in the socket.
Remove set ring 1 (see photo) and gland 2, marking the position. Press out needle bearings 3 and 4, together with the latter, remove the mounting washer 5 and oil seal 6.
Remove the cover of the valve box and the outer ring of the bearing 5. Check the condition of the sealing rings 1-4.
Remove the bearing bush and needle bearing. There must be no gap between the bearing bush and the needle bearing (Needle bearings are available in four different sizes).
Press the intermediate cover and piston out of the steering gear housing. Check up a condition of sealing rings 1-4.
Remove the worm shaft from the piston and remove the balls (23 pieces). Remove the intermediate cover and ball circulation guide tube.
Check the condition of the thrust needle bearing 1 (see photo), thrust washer 2, grooved ring 3 and Teflon ring 5.
