1. When the engine is cold (at least three hours after the trip) inspect the exhaust system all the way from the engine to the rear pipe. Ideally, the exhaust system is best inspected on a lift, but if one is not available, then raise the car with a jack and place reliable props under it.
2. When inspecting, pay attention to the presence of traces of exhaust gas leaks, especially in connections, for damage and corrosion of pipes and connections. Also inspect all brackets and hangers for the exhaust system and make sure that they are in good condition and securely hold the system in the air (pic. 11.2). Exhaust leaks usually look like black spots and are easily visible.
3. If crackling, creaking and other noises are sometimes heard while driving, this may be caused by impacts and friction of the exhaust system on the bottom of the body. Try moving the exhaust system on the hangers and see if it can touch the bottom or the suspension components.
If the system has too much range of motion, then the system suspensions are most likely faulty. Replace them or adjust as needed.
