Withdrawal
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Drain the coolant from the engine (see section «Coolant replacement»).
Disconnect the upper and lower hoses from the radiator, after releasing and sliding back the clamps.
Models 316i from September 1988 and 318i from September 1987
Disconnect the lower hose from the expansion tank.
Remove fan (see section «Removal and installation of the fan»).
Unscrew the upper mounting bolts and pull the radiator up.
316i pre-August 1988 and 318i pre-August 1987
Loosen the left and right screws securing the fan cover -3- and place the cover on the fan.
Six-cylinder engine: Use a screwdriver to pull out the retaining clips -5- of the fan cowl. Pull the cover up and put it on the fan.
Loosen the left and right screws securing the fan cover -3- and place the cover on the fan.
Detach ventilation hose -4- and lay to one side.
Automatic transmission: block the oil hoses going from the box and to the box with clamps and unscrew from the radiator. At the same time, strictly observe cleanliness. Before disconnecting, wipe the connection points with alcohol. Then place small plastic bags with rubber rings over the tubes to keep dirt out of the tubes.
Air conditioning: Disconnect the auxiliary fan temperature switch connectors.
Remove bolt -1-. Remove the washers and fold them in the order of subsequent installation.
Pull radiator -2- upwards.
Attention: Radiator fins have sharp cuts, so it is recommended to wear work gloves when removing the radiator.
Installation
Check all water hoses for cuts, cracks or other damage and, if necessary, replace damaged hoses. Check the condition of the rubber lugs on the radiator.
Insert the radiator from above so that the radiator mounting pins engage with the rubber tips at the bottom of the mount.
Screw the radiator, while ensuring the correct position of the bushings and washers.
Install radiator shroud and secure with bolts and clips.
Six-cylinder engine: Insert the lower part of the fan cowl and secure with clips from above.
Connect the ventilation hose and secure with a clamp.
Connect water hoses and secure with clamps.
If removed, connect oil hoses by tightening union nuts to 20 Nm. remove clamps from hoses. Connect the temperature switch connectors.
Pour coolant into the engine.
Connect ground wire to battery.
Warm up the engine and check the tightness of the hose connections.
Check coolant level and top up if required.
Automatic transmission: Check oil level and add oil if required (see section «Checking the oil level in the box»).
